Queen’s University of Belfasthas been formally recognised as a University of Sanctuary.

Universities of Sanctuary facilitate access to higher education for local refugee, asylum seeker and migrant communities, and help them to overcome the obstacles they face.

Since pledging to become a University of Sanctuary last June, the University has taken meaningful steps to amplify the voices of those seeking sanctuary, including hosting weekly Sanctuary Coffee Mornings on campus and enhancing our support for displaced academics, scholars, and students.

This announcement comes as the University officially launched its 180th anniversary celebrations, hosting a special event to celebrate the impact Queen’s has had on communities locally, nationally and internationally.

“We are immensely proud to have been recognised as a University of Sanctuary. This milestone is a testament to the ongoing dedication of our staff and students who have worked to ensure Queen’s is a place of welcome, opportunity, and inclusion.

“As we celebrate 180 years of Queen’s, we reaffirm our commitment to building a diverse, compassionate community that supports those who seek sanctuary. Our partnerships and outreach efforts reflect our belief that education should be accessible and empowering for all, regardless of background or circumstance.” (Professor Sir Ian Greer, President and Vice-Chancellor).
